The Calvin volleyball team will step on the floor to start the 2017 season as the top-ranked team in the nation, according to the preseason Division III Top-25 poll released by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.
With 62 of the possible 63 first-place votes, the Knights tallied 1,573 total points. Emory ranked second with a total of 1, 395 points, with Washington-St. Louis coming in the third spot with 1,358 points.
The Knights are set to face seven team that are ranked in the AVCA Top-25.
Among those, 15th-ranked Hope is on the schedule twice and they will square off with 23rd ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh, No. 14 Trinity and sixth-ranked Cal Lutheran in Texas.
Calvin finished the season with a 33-1 record last season capturing the team’s third national title in seven seasons. Head coach Amber Warners has led the Knights to national titles in 2010 and 2013, as well as a trip to the national final in 2012.
Two key players return for the Knights, both having earned 2016 AVCA Division III All-American accolades. Junior outside hitter Anna Kamp was tabbed a First-Team member, while senior setter Jenna Lodewyk was named to the Second Team.
Calvin will open the season on September 1st, travelling to Texas for the two-day Trinity National Invitational.
