Women’s Volleyball Opens Play Tonight

Tonight is the night the D3 Women’s Volleyball world has been waiting for since last November, when the Calvin Knights hoisted the NCAA Championship trophy following their 3-0 defeat of WashingtonU in 2016 Tournament Final. Teams across the country have been waiting for the opportunity to get back on the floor and for many, tonight is that night.

The D3 Volleyball season is set to open play tonight with games scheduled from coast to coast.

We take a look at the AVCA Preseason Top-10, and where and when they’ll get things rolling.

1. Calvin

The defending champions travel to San Antonio, Texas to open their season at the Trinity National Invitational.

The Knights will open against UW-Oshkosh this afternoon at 4pm and then battle the host Trinity (TX) at 8pm. They will then square off Saturday at 12pm against Cal-Lutheran, followed by a 2:30pm match with Whitman.

2. Emory

Emory will open the season tonight and tomorrow on the road in Springfield, Ohio to compete in the Wittenberg University National Invitational Tournament. Tonight’s match will be a 5pm start against Johns Hopkins, followed by a pair of matches Saturday as the Eagles are scheduled to face Whittenburg at 12pm and Illinois Wesleyan at 3pm.


3. WashingtonU

The Bears will open their season hosting six teams in the Bear Invitational beginning tonight at 6pm against Rose-Hulman, followed by an 8pm match against Cornell College. Saturday the Bears will take the floor against Hope for a 2:30pm scheduled start.


4. Northwestern (MN)

Northwestern (MN) will hold the first-annual Kathryne Pals Legacy Invitational tonight and tomorrow at the Ericksen Center in St. Paul, Minnesota. The Eagles open with a match against Loras at 3pm today, and will face UW-Stevens Point at 7pm. Saturday’s action will feature matches against Concordia-Moorhead and Buena Vista at 1pm and 3pm, respectively.

5. Southwestern (TX)

The Pirates will travel to Santa Cruz, California for the annual Slug Fest at UC-Santa Cruz. They will open play this morning at 11am against Mills, followed by a 4pm match with Elmhurst. On Saturday, they will take the floor at 4pm against Western New England followed by a 9pm match with host UC-Santa Cruz.


6. Cal Lutheran

Cal-Lutheran will join National Champion Calvin at the Trinity National Invitational in San Antonio, Texas with an opening match with UW-Oshkosh today at 3pm. The Regals will return to the floor at 7pm tonight against Whitman. Saturday will feature at 9am battle with Calvin followed by a 1:30pm match with host Trinity (TX).


7. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

The Athenas will kick off 2017 by co-hosting the Pacific Coast Classic with Pomona-Pitzer and La Verne.

A 1:30pm match with Brockport followed by a 6pm contest with Millikin will serve as the opener for CMS. Saturday’s action will start at 9am with a match against UW-Eau Claire and then a 6pm tournament closer against Texas-Dallas.

8. Colorado College

Colorado College kicks off the season with the CC Classic today with a 2pm match against Whittier, followed by a 6pm contest with Ithaca. On Saturday, the Tigers will face Berry at 2pm and Augustana (IL) at 6pm.

9. Mary Washington

The Eagles open play Saturday (9/2) at the Haverford Invitational, with an opening matches against John Carroll and Eastern at 1pm and 3pm, respectively. They will take the floor again on Sunday to face Stevens at 12pm and host Haverford at 2pm.


10. Texas-Dallas

Texas-Dallas will travel to California to open the season at the Pacific Coast Classic.

The Comets will open play against LaVerne at 6pm tonight, followed by an 8pm match against Pomona-Pitzer. Saturday’s action will feature a 3pm contest against UW-Eau Clarie and then a closing match with host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 8pm.
