Sandestin, Fla., Oct. 17, 2017 – The No. 14-ranked Washington University in St. Louis women’s golf team fired a tournament low 13-over par 301 on Tuesday at the Baytowne Golf Club in route to capturing first place at the Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational for the first time in program history.
The Bears 912 (304-307-301) finished with a 33-stroke advantage over runner-up and No. 16-ranked Huntingdon College’s 945 (311-314-320). WashU also outshot multiple teams ranked ahead of the Bears including No. 5-ranked University of Mary Hardin Baylor 950 (323-315-312), No. 6-ranked Berry College 952 (331-307-314), No. 13-ranked Washington & Lee University 954 (321-318-315) and No. 17-ranked Methodist University 957 (318-321-318).
WashU combined for 27 birdies and 163 pars to pace the 16 team field. The Bears finished six birdies ahead of University of Texas-Tyler’s second best 21 while they also carded 23 additional pars compared to Mary Hardin-Baylor’s 140. The Red & Green average strokes on par-3 (3.21), par-4 (4.32) and par-5 (5.23) also led the group.
Sophomore Samantha Haubenstock captured medalist honors as she tied for first place with a three round eight-over par total of 224 (74-75-75). Haubenstock led all 78 competitors with a tournament best eight birdies, including three during Tuesday’s action.
Also earning All-Tournament honors were senior Erin Drolet 227 (76-75-76), junior Chloe DiPetrillo 229 (74-81-74) and freshman Gigi Garcia 234 (80-76-78).
Sophomore Emily Carnes nearly made it five All-Tournament members as she charged up the leaderboard with a four-over par round three score of 76. She finished the tournament with 237 strokes (80-81-76).
All five members of the Bears lineup carded 30 or more pars, including Haubenstock and freshman Garcia’s team-leading 34. WashU’s lineup combined for 10 birdies on Tuesday.
The fall schedule has concluded for WashU women’s golf and the Bears will begin spring season on Sunday, March 11, 2018 during the University Athletic Association (UAA) Championships in Hammock Beach, Fla.
