MBKB: Offensive Explosions from Dempsey, Sorensen close out 2017

The December calendar closed out with a bang, as a scoring barrage took place on a pair of courts December 30.

The outburst was led by Muskingum‘s Marcus Dempsey, who set a school record with a 57-point game against Oberlin that set the bar for this season as the top single-game mark of the year.

Right on Dempsey’s heels was a 54-point display from North Central‘s Alex Sorenson, breaking what was a 62-year Cardinal single-game mark.

Muskingum sophomore Marcus Dempsey was honored for his outstanding play over the holiday break by being named the Ohio Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.

Dempsey set the school record for points in a game with his 57-point performance against Oberlin in the Yeoman Tournament championship game. The previous record of 54 points was set during the 1912-13 season by Babe Arnold. Dempsey connected on 19-of-30 from the field, including 7-of-12 from behind the arc and 12-of-16 free throws. His 30 attempts also tied the school record for field goals attempted in a game which was set by Jim Vejsicky against Ohio Northern during the 1970-71 campaign.

On day one of the Oberlin Tournament against Medaille, Dempsey scored 48 points on 15-of-20 shooting, which included hitting 7-of-8 three-point shots and 11-of-17 free throws.

Dempsey was named the Holiday Classic All-Tournament Most Valuable Player after scoring 105 total points on 68% shooting from the field (34-of-50) and adding six rebounds and six assists.

Jan. 2, 2018 – After putting up one of the signature scoring efforts thus far this season by any NCAA Division III player nationwide, North Central College senior Alex Sorenson has been designated as the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for Dec. 18-31, making him the first Cardinal to be so recognized thus far this season.

Sorenson broke a 62 year-old North Central single-game record on Saturday by pouring in 54 points on 25 of 29 shooting from the floor, while also grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds, in a 117-72 victory over Robert Morris University-Chicago at Gregory Arena. His point total is the second-highest by a Division III player this season, behind only Muskingum College’s Marcus Dempsey, who scored 57 in a 111-104 loss to Oberlin College in a game that was played the same day. Sorenson’s 25 made field goals, also a North Central record, are five more than that of any other Division III player this season to date.

Sorenson also put up 24 points and seven rebounds in a 92-78 victory over Albion College on Tuesday, Dec. 19, giving him an average of 39.0 points per game during the holiday break. He currently ranks first in the CCIW in field-goal percentage (.642), second in rebounds (9.7 per game) and sixth in scoring (18.4 points per game).

North Central (7-4, 1-2 CCIW) returns to conference play on Wednesday, hosting Carthage College (7-4). Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
