SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – The Carthage College Red Men finished off a perfect 3-0 weekend on Saturday at the Jim Coleman Invitational, hosted by Wittenberg University, with a four-set win over #6 Juniata College, 3-1.

The win moves the Red Men to 4-0 on the season, while the Eagles fall to 2-2 on the season.

“It’s great to finish the weekend off with a win over a very good team,” said head coach LJ Marx after the win. “Overall we played well and probably should have won in three, but let the third get away from us late. It was nice to bounce back the way we did in the fourth, in a very entertaining set. Once we clean up some of our mental mistakes we should be a very tough team.”

Carthage hit .258 to Juniata’s .202 in the four-setter, as the Red Men jumped out to a 2-0 lead following 25-22 and 25-16 wins to grab control of the match. In the third set the Red Men looked to have it wrapped up, however a number of unforced errors allowed Juniata to take the third set late, 26-24. The #9 Red Men rebounded and looked as though they were going to walk away with a convincing fourth set win, but a late run by the Eagles eventually drew Juniata even at 21-21. From there the Red Men and Eagles exchanged points until following a Max Bongratz kill and a Juniata service error ended the match, 28-26.

Following the tournament, sophomore outside hitter Braeden Waumans was named to the 2018 Jim Coleman Invitational All-Tournament Team. Waumans finished with a team-high 18 kills in the win and added nine digs and two blocks. Joining Braeden in double-figures was Matt Slivinski with ten, marking the first time in his career with ten-or-more kills in a match.

Matt Reinsel, who led the Red Men all week at setter, finished with a season-high 48 assists in the win. In the three matches Reinsel, the 2017 NCAA Division III Statistical Champion in assists per set, averaged 10.5 aps and tallied 105 total on the week.

Carthage will return to action on Wednesday with another road match, as the Red Men head to Lisle, Illinois to face Benedictine University at 7:00 p.m. Following Wednesday’s match, the Red Men will be back at Tarble Arena on Saturday, January 27th, for the 2018 Carthage College Triangular with Concordia University Wisconsin and the #8 University of California-Santa Cruz.
